Volunteer Opportunities

Council on Aging literally could not provide the services that it does without its team of caring, dedicated volunteers.

Some Council on Aging volunteers help out on a short-term or seasonal basis while others choose a long-term volunteer commitment. The Council offers service opportunities to fit a wide variety of interests and schedules.

Home Delivered Meal Drivers, based at Council's ten Senior Dining Centers, bring "meals on wheels: to homebound older adults throughout Clare and Gladwin Counties.  Dining Center Volunteers help center managers with a variety of tasks depending on special events, leading games, teaching classes, even providing entertainment.  Friendly Drivers transport non-driving seniors to routine medical appointments.  Office Volunteers assist Council on Aging staff with tasks like phone work, collating and filing.  Friendly Callers/Visitors provide friendship/support to seniors with regular telephone or face-to-face contact.

Successful Council on Aging volunteers have a concern for the issues and problems of the aging.  They are patient, dependable and above all are "team players" who can work with other staff to help meet client needs.  Volunteers must pass background checks.  Driving volunteers must have their own reliable transportation and a good driving record and proof of current vehicle insurance Driving volunteers do receive a small mileage reimbursement.

Council on Aging formally honors its volunteers twice a  year.  We also have a Volunteer of the Month program spotlighting individual volunteers and regularly nominates volunteers for other community service awards.
